Are morning glory seeds legal to ingest in illinois? (Please site source.)?

I'm currently in a position where i am searching for legal means of euphoria or at least a mind altered state. Salvia was my first choice, but as of this year salvia is illegal. If there is another substance you think i should try I'm open to it also, but i would still like to know if the seeds are legal. No Rx or derivatives of illegal or prescription substances.

Are morning glory seeds legal to ingest in illinois? (Please site source.)?
I can go down to the hardware store anytime I want and buy all of the Morning Glory seeds that I want here in Illinois. If they are not illegal to buy and grow, why would they be illegal to eat?

Most seed catalogs sell Morning Glory seeds and ship them anywhere in the United States, maybe with an exception or two. Illinois is not an exception.
Reply:I doubt it is legal, but I don't know. Although I suppose if enough people die from trying to eat them, it will be soon enough.

it is listed as a toxic plant here:

"Eating the seeds can cause liver or neurological damage."

"Use of morning glory seeds is unhealthy for any person,"

"To discourage morning glory's use as hallucinogenic drugs, some commercial seed producers have started treating seeds with a chemical that will not wash off. This chemical has been known to cause vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain. Seeds are also sometimes treated with Methyl mercury to prevent spoilage. These in themselves are poisonous and can cause liver and neurological damage (to the brain and nerves). Nausea is common even with untreated seeds."

Reply:Morning glory seeds are not just a laxative

....they're DEADLY POISON

.....Many people have DIED trying them
Reply:Vodka is still legal in Illinois.

Morning glory seeds are a laxative, but if you find that euphoric, more power to you.
Reply:Honestly, a clear answer to this question can't really be given. Technically, Morning Glory Seeds contain D-lysergic acid amide, a banned substance federally. This substance is similar to LSD, which has a much higher potency. Pragmatically, however, no one will ever be arrested for purchasing or possessing seeds of a plant so common that it is considered a weed in some areas. A simple answer of "I'm interested in botany" should satisfy any interrogators.

For a very brief background, this substance has been used traditionally for centuries in Mexican shamans to induce visions, and are still used by some tribes today. It seems to me in no way does the government have the right to limit or ban this substance, which its citizens safely partake in, and I find it a shame that glory-seeking politicians in Illinois would take such a step as banning the traditional plant Salvinorum Divinorum strikes me as shameful. Remember this in the next elections.

As for the reports of people dying, or other horrifying stories, it should be noted that anti-drug sources in the past have made up complete fabrications to sway public opinion. The amount of psychoactive substance in these seeds makes overdosing a very improbable occurrence, although nausea may occur. It should be noted that allergic reactions can occur to any natural substance as well.

As for preparation, the sight erowid.org offers interesting advice and recipes for morning glory seeds, but my choice is usually tea, making sure to buy and consume only UNTREATED seeds. Erowid can also be a source of enlightenment on many mind altering conditions, and how drug laws became so draconian today that one must ask, "Is an abundant and traditionally used seed legal to be consumed?"

Wow, thats a lot of text. Sorry.
